Italian Panorama - PhotoVogue festival

Realized by Andrea Baioni and selected from PhotoVogue Festival's Local Open Call, endorsed by Vogue Italia

"This series of AI generated portraits and landscapes inquires about what AIs think Italy and Italians are. gauGAN2 was asked to produce landscapes for inputs such as “Italian panorama hills / mountains / lakes”, while a modified version of styleGAN was asked to create portraits of people feeding from the results of searches for “Italian person”. The results where then converted into 3D models via Metahumans, and rendered in Unreal Engine 5. The whole process probed the limits and biases of AIs, which feed off data that is, by the nature of its source, itself biased, incomplete, stereotypical and / or outdated. The results are a glimpse into an Italy that, even if it’s not real, is still a reflection of our own perception."  Andrea Baioni
