Tatenda Chidora

Born in Zimbabwe and now based in South Africa, Tatenda Chidora works across commercial, fine art, and fashion photography, and his contemporary style places him within what's been described as the "new African photography" movement. At the heart of his practice is a drive to create a more diverse visual record of the African metropolis — one shaped by the actual stories and faces he encounters, rather than external assumptions about the continent.

Light is central to how he works. Tatenda studies the way natural light behaves, paying close attention to how it shapes a face or carves into a landscape. That understanding translates directly into his photography, where he commands both natural and studio lighting to render Black skin luminously, achieving a richness of tone whether he's shooting in color or his signature black and white. His striking, often unexpected angles have the effect of making heroes out of his subjects.

Tatenda describes himself as a continual student of the medium, shooting across genres to keep sharpening his craft. He moves fluidly between fine art sensibility and editorial polish, often finding subjects on the street who catch his interest. For him, portraiture isn't just about photographing people,  it's about connecting with them and using the everyday as a muse.
